Information:
The above photo is a 360 degree photo taken from the middle
ledge of Ashley Falls. The graffiti is unfortunately real as
the North South Lake Campground is a very popular spot
especially during the Summer months. Since the rockface is
tarnished I added my own "tag" above the
"city-like-graffiti" (fortunately enough this is only on the
photo with the help of Photoshop.) Someone is standing on
the far right.
Ashley Falls
Information:
Ashley Falls is roughly 40
feet high and consists of a 15-foot upper plunge fall and a
lower cascade containing much talus, some of respectable
size. (Catskill Region Waterfall Guide
by Russell Dunn)
Ashley Falls is reached by an
easy 1/4 mile walk. During the winter months the Campground
is closed and so is the roadway to vehicle traffic. The walk
is then expanded an extra 3/4 mile on easy pavement.
The trailhead for the
Mary's Glen Trail (the trail which is used to reach Ashley
Falls) is located in the North-South Lake State Campground (open
May-October, day use fee charged).
Turn onto North Lake Road (Greene County Rt. 18) from NY 23A
near Haines Falls. This point is 1.3 miles further west of
the parking area for the Kaaterskill Falls trail. From this
intersection, drive 3.2 miles to the trailhead for the
Mary's Glen Trail, on the left. Parking is just ahead on the
left.
The trail goes north from
the trailhead, following the west side of Ashley Creek on
the level for 0.2 miles, about five minutes, to a junction.
Go right on the spur trail to the base of Ashley Falls.
This hike starts out a little rough-on a cobbled streambed.
The short easy hike takes you through a lovely wooded glen
alongside a beaver meadow to the base of a heavily forested
cascade known as Ashley Falls. The place name, Mary's Glen,
remembers Mary Scribner, whose husband Ira once operated a
sawmill on the creek.
